The Benny Store

Created by John Pointer

Yesterday Was Weird started as a simple post that went viral and helped millions of people cope with the grief of a loss, and remember the love that lives on. It is now an illustrated hardcover book for anyone who has to face “weird days” of their own. If you would like me to write anything special in your book just send me a message and I’ll be happy to customize it for you, a friend, or a loved one. If you'd just like a plain book without a dedication or note, select "plain" from the dropdown menu and get $10 off. As you scroll through the other items in the store, there are still about 50 shirts available, but not in all designs, sizes, styles, or colors. Most of them are charcoal gray, but there are some in black and a couple left in baby blue. If you can’t seem to find what you want, email me and I’ll let you know if I have one. If you have any other questions just ask. Sincerely, John (AKA Benny's Person) [email protected]

Several steps closer...
over 6 years ago – Mon, Aug 21, 2017 at 03:10:56 PM

Turns out, it's terrifying to face your fears. At least, it is for me. That's part of the news about where we are today. I realized that the closer we got to the finish line, the more fearful I was of making a mistake.

After I printed the test copy, I went into emotional paralysis. Admitting it was the first step, so now that I'm aware, I'm walking through the fear. In the end, all I can do is my best.

I contacted the designers today to knock out the last few steps:

  • Adding "Pro Bene Publishing, 1712 E Riverside Dr #201, Austin, TX 78741" to the credits page
  • Adding an ISBN (need to find out if I have to buy it or if the printer will assign it)
  • Desaturating the artwork - it's too vibrant for how sad the story is

As you can see, that remaining punch list is really, really short, so that's good news.

Even better news: I selected a printing company! They will send me all the information next week for setting up the artwork for their machines. I'll also find out if I need to supply an ISBN or if they will provide one (step two, above).

I also hired a research assistant to find contact information for the various national veterinary offices, veterinary associations, pet stores, online communities, and pet grief organizations. I need to know if any of them want copies before I go to press. *Important note: I will not delay the process. I will simply add their numbers to the order if they submit them in time.*

As always, thank you for your support. Your patience has not gone unnoticed and I'm going to make sure it is rewarded with the best book possible. And remember, this is the only time I'll do this myself, so it will become collectible the instant it reaches your hands.

Sincerely,
Benny's Person, John

Live Video Walk-through Tomorrow, Aug 6th
over 6 years ago – Sat, Aug 05, 2017 at 01:21:06 AM

It's been a while and I just wanted to let you know where everything stands.

As you know, I printed the first physical copy of the book to see how it would look. There were a couple of tweaks to be made, but now the artwork and text are done. I had to create a publishing company (Pro Bene Publishing) and bought the ISBN (unique book ID number).

Next steps: I'm going to meet with the designers one more time to talk about paper stock, paper coating, and potentially desaturating the colors a little. As I've sat with it, I think it feels too vibrant for the mood of the story.

Because it's taken so long, I'm getting new printing quotes. Once I finalize the printer choice, they'll send their template for the designers to lay out the pages so that it'll all come out correctly when it's cut and assembled.

I'll do a live video walk-through tomorrow, August 6th, at noon Eastern Daylight Time (GMT/UTC-4) so you can see how it all looks so far and talk about what's next. Send me your questions and I'll answer them in person.

Also, please let me know if you received the rough draft as a PDF. I sent it out through BackerKit in mid-June. If not, tell me and I'll email it directly to you. I'm going to send the final draft the same way, and want to make sure it's working.

Thanks again for your patience and support through this process. See you tomorrow!
